At recent meetings, the Geology group has  discussed types of coal (lignite, sub-bituminous, bituminous and anthracite) and  where these are found in New Zealand (if at all). Most coals were formed  in swamps. 

Another topic was the movement of the Pacific and Australian  Plate boundaries along the Southern Southern Alps of New Zealand.

 Plans are afoot for a field trip in February  (combining with Takapuna U3A) to study the unique Geology of the  area
