The December Guest speaker ~ William Keith |
Subject: Frontiers in the treatment of hearing disorders in Children |
Dr Bill Keith, of Sound Skills, is a leading audiology expert in New Zealand. He spoke to our December meeting about addressing hearing loss especially in young children. Advancing technology makes it possible to accurately test the hearing of babies in the first days of life. It is vital that steps are taken to remedy any hearing loss as early as possible before the auditory links in the brain are almost certainly lost forever with the passage of time. He showed us the difference that cochlear implants can make to the lives of these children and their families so that almost normal hearing and speech can be enjoyed. But the main emphasis of his talk was about Auditory Processing Disorder where there is nothing wrong with the ears but the brain cannot process the sound received. This occurs in 3 – 5% of children, mainly boys and is often undiagnosed. |
